Many ghosts have been seen at Churston Court by guests and staff alike. The most commonly seen ghosts are that of monks, that appear through walls and then disappear again. There are stories of candles being blown out and lit again seemingly of their own accord. The hotel is also the meeting area for the Torbay Investigators of the Paranormal, who have met at the hotel regularly on a Monday night for the last ten years. The group describes the hotel as “atmospherically haunted” and they are happy to offer ghost tours to members of the public.
The hotel was once a coaching inn, and dating back to the 12th century, it is packed with history and plenty of original features. Many famous faces have stayed at the hotel over the years, including Sir Humphrey Gilbert with his half-brother Sir Walter Raleigh, Agatha Christie, who was inspired to write one of her Poirot books during her stay and Bruce Reynolds, who hid at the hotel after the Great Train Robbery.
Churston Court hotel has 19 en-suite bedrooms, all decorated individually with a unique style and feel. All of the rooms at the hotel are furnished with antique furniture, many of which have four poster beds and roll top baths. There’s a range of rooms at the hotel for all budgets – standard and superior, in a mixture of doubles and family rooms. All of the rooms include tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary still and sparkling water and digital LCD televisions.
Irons and hairdryers are available on request, and in the superior rooms, you’ll find walk in wardrobes and walk in showers. There’s also a bar and restaurant at the hotel – and the restaurant is famous for its candle-lit romantic and relaxing ambience. Head chef Andy Howard strives to use organic, local food to produce his imaginative menu – and fresh fish is supplied to the restaurant every day from the nearby Brixham fishing fleet. The bar serves a selection of real ales, wines, cocktails and soft drinks for all tastes.
The hotel also offers many events packages – weddings can take place at the hotel, as they are fully licensed, and there are also rooms available for meetings and conferences. Murder mystery evenings are also available that include a three course set dinner for the price of just £34.95 per person. Whatever your reason for coming to the Churston Court hotel, you’re sure to have a fantastic stay here.
