Ruthin Castle Ghosts
Lady Grey of Ruthin Castle is probably the most well-known ghost of the castle, although there are others – visitors have reported seeing a soldier, as well as a little girl. Lady Grey is said to have found out her husband was having an affair with a peasant girl, and then subsequently killed her husband’s mistress. After this, she was tried of murder and sentenced to death and since then, has not left the castle. She’s been seen in the banqueting hall and wandering the castle battlements. The ghostly figure of the soldier has also been spotted wearing just one glove, wandering the ground of the castle. Ghostly orbs have also been seen, which are taken to be an indicator of the presence of one or more human spirits.
Brief History
The castle was built in 1217 by Edward the 1st as a strong baronial castle, complete with numerous defences. Before this time, the castle was actually a wooden fortress. King Edward wanted to control the Welsh, and so gave Ruthin Castle to Dafydd, brother of Prince Llewellyn ap Gryyudd in return for his help. In 1282, Llewellyn was considered a traitor when allegiances changed, and Reginald de Grey was then granted the castle in return for building the ‘finest army in the world’ on behalf of King Edward as a reward for his success.
The modern stone castle was built within the castle ruins in 1826 and was owned by the Cornwallis-West family, where it gained fame and notoriety due to the family’s escapades. In 1923, the castle was sold to a private hospital firm and used for the treatment of obscure diseases. It was then then converted into a hotel in the 1960s after being bought at auction.
