Dare to explore the eerie corridors of Ashbourne Town Hall, a place where history and hauntings intertwine, creating an atmosphere ripe for paranormal investigation. Built in 1861 on the foundations of the notorious 17th Century Talbot Inn, Ashbourne Town Hall in Derbyshire is not just a stunning example of Victorian architecture but also a hotbed of ghostly activity.

A Night of Ghost Hunting at Ashbourne Town Hall

As you step into the grandeur of Ashbourne Town Hall, prepare to be transported into a world where the past lingers in every corner. From the echoing ballroom to the mysterious council chambers, each room tells a story of centuries past. The attic and cellar, with their dark corners and hidden spaces, are particularly known for unexplained occurrences.

The Spirits of Ashbourne Town Hall

The Town Hall is steeped in tales of the paranormal. The spirit of Tom Fearn, who tragically lost his life in a freak accident involving a fire bell in the 1930s, is said to linger here. His presence is often felt in the form of unexplained footsteps and a foreboding atmosphere near the memorial plaque dedicated to him.

But Tom Fearn is not the only spirit believed to roam these halls. The echoes of the past are heard in the disembodied voices in the ballroom, the slamming doors, and the sightings of tall, dark shadow figures. Some even whisper of the presence of Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose troops were once billeted in Ashbourne.

History of Ashbourne Town Hall

History of Ashbourne Town Hall

In the heart of Derbyshire, Ashbourne Town Hall stands as a beacon of history, its foundations deeply embedded in the past. Erected in 1861, this architectural marvel replaced the 17th Century Talbot Inn, a place rich in stories and social significance.

The Talbot Inn was more than just a lodging; it was a pivotal part of Ashbourne’s social and historical landscape. Featured in Izaak Walton’s and Charles Cotton’s “The Compleat Angler,” it was a popular spot for travelers and locals, known for its Derbyshire ale and warm atmosphere. It also played a role in the legal history of the 17th century, hosting important legal examinations.

Ashbourne’s resilience is epitomized in its recovery from a devastating fire in 1252, which ravaged the town. The Market Place, once lined with timber-framed buildings, was reborn from the ashes, with new structures including the Talbot Inn symbolizing the town’s enduring spirit.

The site of the Town Hall is steeped in historical significance, including the 1745 arrival of Bonnie Prince Charlie. His declaration outside the Talbot Inn left a lasting mark on Ashbourne’s history.

However, the site is also remembered for the tragic death of Tom Fearn in 1930, a casualty of a falling balance bar from a fire bell during a false alarm. This event is commemorated by a memorial plaque, a somber reminder of the past.

With the construction of the Town Hall, the Talbot Inn gave way to progress. The Town Hall, with its ashlar stone and Victorian design, reflects the architectural preferences of the mid-19th century. Initially a Market Hall, it evolved into a hub for urban administration and community events.

Today, Ashbourne Town Hall is more than a building; it’s a living chronicle of the town’s history. Each element of its structure holds stories of joy, tragedy, and the daily lives of those who have traversed its halls. It stands as a place where history is palpably felt, a testament to the town’s journey through time.
