There have been numerous spooky sightings at the Maids Head Hotel. A woman believed to be a former maid dressed in grey has been seen moving around the hotel silently, followed by the smell of musty lavender. If you can’t see the ghost, you may well be able to sense her presence from the smell of lavender alone.

The ghost of a man believed to be one of the former mayors of the city has also been seen in the courtyard of the hotel, shaking his head vigorously.

Brief History

The hotel is steeped in history, and dating back to the 13th century, it boasts an impressive mixture of styles. It was originally owned by the early Bishops in the days of William the Conqueror, and it’s thought that Elizabeth I slept at the hotel in 1587, inspiring the room now named the Queen Elizabeth Suite, which is where she was believed to have slept during her stay.

Maids Head has a whopping 84 en-suite bedrooms and with a mixture of doubles, twins, executive rooms, historical feature rooms, character rooms and rooms suitable for families, there’s definitely something here for everyone.

All of the rooms are individually decorated in a modern style that still reflects the history of the hotel, with luxurious soft furnishings and complementary fabrics. Every bedroom comes with en-suite bath or shower facilities, duvets, satellite television, hair dryer and tea and coffee making facilities – and room service is available 24 hours a day if there’s anything else you need.

The newly created restaurant at the hotel, WinePress@Wensum, has been awarded an AA rosette for quality food. The restaurant prides itself in offering food prepared with fresh, local produce, as well as 40 wines by the glass – enabling visitors to get a taste of expensive wines without having to spend lots of money. There’s also a panelled bar at the hotel that offers a range of real ales and lagers, The Yard Bar for lighter meals and a glass of wine and The Snug, a captain’s table suitable for any special occasion.

Weddings and conferences can also be catered for at Maids Head Hotel – just ask a member of staff for more information.
