The Ghosts

As you walk into this fearsome Victorian prison it is easy to envision yourself as one of the prisoners, stepping through the entrance doors and into the search area you really do get the instant fear of losing your freedom.

The Spirit of an assertive female haunts the ground floor ladies area of the jail, said to be very dominating and a known ring leader of trouble. Why does she still haunt this section of the prison? Several “nosey spirits” have been heard within the building, rattling metal on metal only to stop as you get near, shadows of former prison guards and inmates have been reported, along with cries for help which echo though the dead of night!

A confused male spirit has been reported who goes by the name of Ken, his communication is so strong it’s although he is still in the cell with you. Can you strike up communication with this gentleman, who claims his innocence to anyone with the ears to hear him! Residual energy resonates throughout Stellhouse Lane, creating many feelings of dread and high emotion. Great protection is needed here which our Haunted Houses hosts will guide you with.

Imagine yourself locked inside one of the small cells in 1912; hearing the sound of the guards feet clinking on the wrought iron walkways and up and down the stairs, knowing that they could come to your cell at any time! You can almost hear the echoes of the other prisoners resounding throughout the building. You could maybe imagine yourself being guided through the underground tunnels from the court, knowing that this is the last time you could be free for a while or maybe you could come across one of the guards.

Whichever spirit you encounter at Steelhouse Lane Lock Up be sure to ask for their story, whether they were innocent or guilty they will always have an interesting tale to tell.

Brief History

This grade II listed building opened in 1892 as one of the first Lock ups in England. With over 126 years of judicial history since completion, it held some of the most hardened criminals in the country.

Steelhouse Lane today still contains many of it’s original features, including cell doors and iron flooring and steps. During The Victorian period many had to commit petty crimes in order to feed their families – so Steelhouse Lane was a building of fear; as if caught – Being held inside was the difference of life or death for your dependents, so this was a building severely hated.
