The Reported Ghosts of the Skirrid Inn

The ghostly activity witnessed at the Skirrid Inn has seen ghost hunters flock to this location from all over the world to get a firsthand glimpse at what has been reported here, with many not leaving empty handed.

Many visitors have reported a tightening of the throat as if being straggled by a noose around the neck, are their spirits which want to share what they went through within these walls? Suffering their slow, agonizing death whilst they suffocated under their own weight. Have the emotions of this activity attached itself to the fabric of the building?

Reports of glasses shooting across the bar, ghostly footsteps are reported from rooms above, and massive drops in temperature have been heavily documented. Former Inn keepers and staff alike have reported of hearing an un-nerving laughter echo through the building from unseen sources, and large terrifying shadows have been reported to move along the walls. With so much going on it is no wonder this building not only claims to be Wale’s oldest inn, but most haunted too!

The Brief History of The Skirrid Inn

The Skirrid Inn has a dark history of mass execution where many men, women and children had their lives taken from them for a multitude of “supposed” crimes. Since 1110 AD, the Skirrid Inn was used as a courthouse which ensured punishment was harsh and death was slow due to the thickness of the rope and shortness of the drop, making this location one of the saddest and some say most haunted buildings in Wales. It is believed that the bloody Judge Jefferies was responsible for many of these hangings.

One of the bedrooms on the first floor was once the actual courtroom, Will you dare spend time alone in such a room where many lives were destroyed by cruel justice.

Many English and Welsh Kings and Queens have been said to of visited and stayed at the Skirrid Inn, even to this day the old mounting stone that they would of used still sits in the courtyard outside. Legend tells that a former English kings guard turned welsh rebel Owain Glyndwr rallied his troops outside.

The Infamous bloody judge Jeffries, or the hanging judge, was said to have his beginnings from the Skirrid Inn, known for the being the cause of hundreds, if not thousands of deaths by the hangman’s noose.

An ancient beam rests high above the staircase which is said to be the beam where all the hangings took place, and to this day the marks where the rope has worn into the wood can be seen.
