Shibden Hall, one of Halifax’s most prized historical gems, has become known as one of the most haunted sites in the area. Though ghostly phenomena have only surfaced recently, the hall boasts a rich and complex history that makes it a fascinating site for paranormal enthusiasts.
The estate’s origins date back to 1389, but the existing oak-timbered H-plan structure was first built in 1420. Over the centuries, the hall underwent significant renovations, particularly in the 1520s and 1830s. Rumour has it that Emily Brontë drew inspiration from Shibden Hall for Thrushcross Grange in her novel “Wuthering Heights.” Brontë, who taught nearby at Law Hill School in Southowram in 1838, would have been well acquainted with the hall.
Owned by the Lister family from 1615 to 1933, Shibden Hall’s most famous resident was Anne Lister, who inherited the estate in 1826. During her time there, she made substantial changes to both the building and its grounds. Unfortunately, her plans for further improvements were cut short by her untimely death from the plague during her travels in Russia in 1840.
Anne Lister’s life was nothing short of extraordinary. Known for her open lesbianism and cross-dressing, she faced significant hostility, earning the nickname “Gentleman Jack.” Despite these challenges, she was a successful estate manager and landlord, investing in various local businesses. Her extensive diaries, which detailed her affairs in code, are now regarded as valuable sources for 19th-century local, social, and gender history.
Lister’s most notable affair was with Ann Walker, heiress to Cliffe Hill Mansion at Lightcliffe. Their “marriage” took place at Holy Trinity Church in Goodramgate, York, and Lister bequeathed Shibden Hall to Walker in her will.
However, Walker struggled with mental health issues and was eventually institutionalised. After her death in 1854, the property returned to the Lister family.
The ghosts of Shibden Hall are as varied and intriguing as the estate’s storied past. Though tales of a “Grey Lady” are often at the forefront of any paranormal reports, other chilling encounters have been reported by those who’ve worked and visited the historic site.
Staff have shared their own experiences, including an eerie encounter with a shadowy black figure that drifted overhead at dawn. The mysterious scent of pipe smoke, believed to be an echo of the hall’s last occupant, Dr. John Lister, an antiquarian and avid pipe-smoker, has also been noted in the cellar and tower on multiple occasions.
It is said that Ann Walker’s spirit haunts the red room of Shibden Hall, where she once barricaded herself and attempted suicide.
Her tormented soul is thought to be the most prominent of the many ghosts that wander the historic halls, their eerie presence an enduring testament to the site’s dark and intriguing past.
Other chilling tales include a former curator’s sighting of a spectral cat that passed straight through her office wall, the ghost of a young girl who drowned in a nearby pond and only appears during the summer months, and the enigmatic figure of a headless coachman.
This phantom driver is said to traverse the grounds by night in a distinctive yellow-liveried coach, originally crafted for Lord Lonsdale in the 18th century and now on display at the hall.

Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the venue, the location is unfortunately not wheelchair friendly.
Please Note: All guests must be 18 years or older. Not suitable for those who are heavily pregnant. Guests are strongly advised to wear comfortable shoes and warm layered clothing on colder nights.
You’re welcome to bring your own equipment, though we will be providing paranormal equipment to use.
The investigation will be in darkness so please bring a torch with you.
Although snacks and drinks are provided, you’re welcome to bring your own. There are also facilities to make both hot and cold drinks, which are provided also.
And of course, bring your phone/camera with you, the more pictures we have the better chance we have of capturing something!
Other than that, just yourself and an open mind!
On your ghost hunt with Haunted Rooms, you will have full exclusive access to the most haunted areas of this historic location. Together with our friendly team of investigators, you will join others on structured vigils, where you’ll have the chance to use some paranormal equipment and join in on group vigils such as Ouija board sessions, and seance.
Our event starts at 8.00 pm but you can arrive at the earliest 7.30 pm. Structured investigations will end around 12-1 am, at which point you will have the opportunity to investigate this location on your own using the techniques and information you have been provided with.
You will have the chance to look around the building before the event to familiarise yourself with its layout. Shortly before the event kicks off, we’ll run you through a quick induction and safety briefing, followed by a short talk and introduction from our team. You’ll then split into smaller groups with your family and/or friends if you’ve come together, and we’ll begin our vigils for the night!
If you have your own paranormal equipment we encourage you to bring it, if not we can provide them free of charge. Snacks, refreshments, and treats will be provided at intervals throughout the night, and we’ll have facilities to make hot and cold drinks too.
We do endeavour to have mediums and sensitives with us for every event, although circumstances out of our control can sometimes prevent this. Anybody that has sensitive abilities we encourage you to come forward, as it only increases the energy and enjoyment for all in attendance.
To get the most from the evening we encourage you to try your hand at as many things as you can, and if you’re feeling particularly brave you should give a lone vigil a try, as well as joining in with our table tipping experiments as we try to commune with the spirits and ghosts of the building.
Please dress weather appropriately, with extra layers of clothing if it’s cold, plus comfortable shoes and a torch if you need one.
