The Reported Ghosts of Haden Hill Hall
Several ghostly experiences have been reported at Haden Hill Hall, House and Park. This are is in fact reputed to be very haunted with many sightings being documented over the years.
The Ghost of Eleanor has been seen to wander the hall and grounds at Haden Hill, said to be a beautiful young woman looking for her forbidden lover, who was a young monk from a Halsowen Abbey. When the unorthodox romance was discovered it has been said they tried to escape through an underground passageway, but they were both caught by her parents and the Abbot of the abbey. We don’t know whom by, but the monk is said to of then been walled up alive and entombed under Haden Hill Hall in the passage due to his committed sin. Over the centuries Eleanor is said to wander the site to this day looking for her long lost love and the spirit of the monk has been heard, it is said, to make knocking sounds from under the floorboards and to scream for his release.
The ghost of former resident Annie Eliza (1790 – 1876) is said to still haunt Haden old Hall, A loner who lived her days within this building and was the last in a long like for the Haden family, dating back to the Norman times of the 11th century. She was reported to of never married or to of had children. Annie is said to be very open to communicating with any ghost hunter who shows good manners within her home.
Taps, bangs, shadows and strange whistles coming out of the darkness. Haden Hill Hall is said to be one of those buildings you cannot deny being haunted.
This is a story reported by Anne Bradford and Barrie Roberts in their 1994 book Midland Ghosts and Hauntings …
“There have long been stories about a white lady seen on the stairs, in the former dining room and walking across the waters of the Southern Pond in the Park. Legend does
The Brief History of Haden Old Hall
The original building dates back to the Medieval times built by the Haden Family. But the building we see today was built by within the Tudor period
George Alfred Haden Best was the last surviving family member whose line stretched right back to the 11th Century and had lived in the area for all this time after ancestor, Ricardo ate Haudene, was granted permission to build the Hall on a hill which became known as Haden Hill.
The Original family home Haden Hall (where your ghost hunt will take place) was inherited by George and in 1877 he included a new house called Haden Hill House right next to the Hall, with plans to tear down the Old Hall and extend Hill House on the land. What stopped him in his tracks was that his elderly Aunt still lived in the Hall and by the time of her death in 1903, some 26 years after the original plans he no longer wished to continue with the extension. So today the two buildings remain side-by-side.
During the Second World War Haden Hill Hall was used to house evacuee children from the bombed cities, and the passageways below used as air raid shelters.
By the 1970’s Haden Hill Hall was derelict and in danger of collapse, then one fateful night it was left further in ruin by a fire which swept through the Old Hall causing very serious damage to the as well as to the house. In the 1980’s Haden Hill house went through extensive repair and in the 1990’s so did the Old Hall, restoring it to its former glory with thanks to a £2 million National Lottery grant.
