Ghosts of Ordsall Hall

Ordsall Hall, Salford, next to Manchester City Centre is often described as a hidden gem. With records dating back well over 800 years to 1170 the building is teeming with stories from its rich and varied history – many of these paranormal in nature.

Reports of the supernatural at Ordsall Hall go back decades, if not centuries, with local residents reporting frequent sightings of the famous ‘white lady’ a figure who has been spotted inside and outside the Hall many times. In the 1950s caretakers at the Hall reported “Tappings in the cellar as though someone was locked in… Someone walking down the corridor at night but [we] find no-one there”, and the family dog cowering in the corner when these noises were heard. The reports, however, don’t stop there. The Hall currently has a report file of the many experiences visitors have had in recent years, from hearing a dog’s claws pattering on the Great Hall floor to a whole school group feeling the entire room shake as though there was an earthquake. The Hall is also very popular amongst the country’s ghost hunting groups with many events throughout the year.

The ghostly residents of Ordsall Hall have even been attracting a ‘virtual’ audience. We have GhostCams in the Great Hall, Great Chamber and Star Chamber which prove very popular. The three rooms in which the cams are present all sit in the oldest wing of the Hall and are renowned for their high levels of spirit activity. The new cameras will provide better imagery for the viewer, and mean that online visitors will be able to see a 72 hour archive of previous sightings from the cams.

And are the ghosts camera shy? Not by the looks of things! There are regular sightings of spirit children and dogs, visitations by the White Lady – thought to be Lady Margaret Radclyffe who died in 1599, and encounters with a strong male spirit in the Star Chamber who throws things and, occasionally, touches people…..

Brief history

Ordsall Hall, Salford’s Grade 1 listed Tudor manor house was first recorded in 1177. Since then, it has been home to medieval gentry, Tudor nobility, Catholics loyal to the crown, butchers, farmers, an Earl, an artist, priests, scout troops, mill workers, cows and several ghosts!

Today, it is an engaging heritage site open to visitors 5 days a week throughout the year. Surrounded by landscaped grounds, it boasts hands on exhibitions, immersive room settings and a small cafe. The Hall re-opened in May 2011 following a two year £6.5 million restoration project.
