History & Haunting
West Bromwich Magistrates Court and Old Victorian Gaol were built in 1890 to replace the ageing, dilapidated 17th century courts which stood on the same site. The newer Victorian building incorporates new and redesigned gallows to accommodate societies acceptance that undesirables should be sentenced, terminated and efficiently disposed of at a single law establishment.
The large courtroom surrounds the judge and a bomb/bullet proof cubicle was incorporated in later years from the central to contain and protect the more dangerous prisoners.
There are several less elaborate courtrooms to cater for a range of prisoners and crimes and there are a bank of prison cells in the basement in a secure area where prisoners awaited their fate or ate their final breakfast before meeting their maker.
All records have been securely locked away from society for over 100 years and even though public hangings took place here little detail exists of these executions other than the intense atmosphere you feel as soon as you enter the building.
There are countless reports of apparitions of prisoners, staff and children at the old gaol along with the sounds of footsteps following people as if to chase them out of the building. Doors open and close of their own accord and the shrill sounds of screams and voices crying out for help can be heard. Many visitors report the feeling of being touched or pushed or even having their hair and clothing pulled. Sinister growls and hissing are common occurrence here.
