A building has been located on the site of this hotel since the 1300s and the current hotel building has stood since the 17th century. That being said, the hotel has seen a number of famous faces during its many years of trading, including Henry VIII and Peter the Great. Peter the Great is said to haunt this hotel and room three in particular sees a lot of paranormal activity. Staff and guests alike have heard boots and clothing falling to the floor in this room with no-one responsible for the sounds. Perhaps Peter likes to get ready for bed in this room?

Brief History

Dating back to 1350, the hotel is absolutely steeped in history. The name of the hotel is due to Henry VIII staying here – he is what inspired the ‘Kings Arms and Royal’ part of the name. Peter the Great’s stay here inspired much of the décor and his menu still hangs in the hotel today.

Godalming itself is an ancient parish town that has existed since Saxon times. It has a number of listed buildings, including timber-framed cottages, the Kings Arms and Royal hotel and the local parish church. It has a thriving village community with a number of famous faces, including footballer Ashley Cole.

The Kings Arms and Royal has recently undergone a £1,000,000 facelift, transforming the dull interior of the hotel into something spectacular. It now boasts 20 brand new boutique rooms, all sympathetically decorated to an extremely high standard. Most of the rooms are full of period features, making the hotel a wonderful mixture of old and new.

During the renovation, the hotel’s bar and restaurant were transformed into a 1920s style haven which now serves traditional yet delicious fresh British food. The hotel tries to use local produce where possible and they pride themselves on the quality of the food.

There is also a function room on site, available for numerous types of events, including birthdays, weddings, celebrations and wakes. The room is also available for conferences and can seat parties of between 12 and 50 guests.
