Ghosts at Houghton House and Ampthill Park
There have been many reports of hauntings around Ampthill, the most prominent is perhaps Houghton House which is a derelict Grade 1 listed building a stone’s throw from Ampthill Park. The house itself is open to the general public to freely investigate.
Many of the reports centred here are of shadowy figures watching over you. If they’re spotted they dart off and vanish into thin air. Another reported experience is that of sounds of a horse-drawn coach pulling up outside regularly. A small girl standing in the doorway waving is another reported sighting here.
On the doorstep of Houghton House is Ampthill Park, several sightings of a knight on horseback were been reported here in the 1900s. Soldiers who were stationed nearby have also reported seeing the knight galloping away from the cross memorial to the nearby stream and then vanishing into thin air.
At least one local man has reported seeing the knight on several occasions. Were the knight begins his journey there was once a castle that is now marked by a cross.
