The historic Haycock Hotel, situated in the picturesque village of Wansford in Peterborough is a traditional coaching inn, dating back to the 16th century. It boasts an impressive brasserie-style restaurant that has been quoted in the press as offering ‘one of the best gastronomic experiences outside London’.
Since the hotel dates back to the 16th century, it makes sense that a number of guests at the hotel have reported various ghostly goings-on, including sightings of figures in public areas, especially in the oldest part of the hotel. Guests at the hotel have also reported feeling someone in the room with them.
Mary, Queen of Scots stayed at the hotel en-route to her execution at Fotheringhay castle. It has been said by many individuals that Mary is regularly seen at the Haycock hotel as well as other establishments that she stayed in before her execution.
The Haycock Hotel is one of the oldest coaching inns in the south-east of the country and many famous names stayed at the hotel back when it was still a coaching inn, including Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth. Many people would have stayed at the inn as it was one of the most convenient stops between London and Stamford. The first recorded innkeeper of the hotel was William Hodgson, who died in 1706. It then changed hands a number of times before it remained in the Percival family’s hands for 100 years until 1898.
Throughout most of the 19th century, the inn prospered into a successful farm. The inn then became a private residence until 1928, when it was turned back into an inn after being purchased by a dairy farmer named Charles Allday. It then changed hands six more times before being purchased by the current owner, Judith Carter, in 2003.
The hotel has been sympathetically refurbished to a three-star standard. The design brief of the hotel was to be a cross between old and new, luxury and tradition, and this has been achieved by the use of antiques, hand-painted murals, comfortable furnishings and rich fabrics. The hotel has a total of 48 rooms, all en-suite, compromising of a mixture of singles, twins, doubles, garden rooms, kings and junior suites. All of the rooms are individually styled and no two are the same. A porter is also on hand 24 hours a day to cater to all of your room service needs.
The hotel also boasts an AA rosette award-winning restaurant, named the Orchards, which offers brasserie style all-day dining. The restaurant will tailor to all tastes, and they have an emphasis on using only the freshest of ingredients. Business and conference dining is also available in a dedicated dining room. Private dining is also available in any of the rooms within the old coaching house to seat up to 250 guests. The hotel also has a wedding license and offers a number of all-inclusive wedding packages to cater to parties of between 10-240 guests.
