Derby has repeatedly been reported as the most haunted city in the whole of the U.K and this particular hotel does not disappoint. The Georgian House Hotel is said to be home to the spectre of a man in a pin-striped suit and is often used as the starting point for ghost walks and tours.
Although no more information is known about the mysterious man in the pin-striped suit other than that he was once a guest at the hotel, he has been seen on numerous occasions in the hotel and is to blame for slamming doors and causing items to fall from shelves and bookcases. He’s also known for picking items up and moving them around, causing guests to be very confused!
Paranormal goings-on are also common in rooms 10 and 12, and those rooms were made available to a local paranormal investigative team recently. The owners of the hotel often regale guests with stories about rooms 10 and 12 and they definitely seem to be the rooms to stay in if you want to meet a ghost.
The reception area of the Georgian House hotel is said to very active, along with some of the landings and hallways in the hotel. Guests can catch glimpses of mysterious figures in these areas and they have also reported ‘feeling’ spirits.
The Georgian House hotel was originally built in 1756 and is now a grade II listed building. Since the hotel was built, it has seen many visitors pass through its doors – from soldiers to industrial workers, young people to elderly people. When the hotel was first built, it’s very possible that a number of soldiers and noblemen stayed there as Bonnie Prince Charlie set up camp in Derby in the mid-1700s.
Derby was actually the site of the very first water-powered silk mill in Britain. One of the people who built the mill, John Lombe, is thought to have been poisoned by the Piedmontese as an act of revenge for stealing the secrets of silk-throwing from Piedmont.
The hotel is a lovely combination of old-world charm, country house hotel and relaxing interiors. You can find evidence of this old-world charm throughout the hotel, including in the bedrooms, hallways, and bar area. There are eighteen en-suite bedrooms in the hotel that are all individually styled and furnished, giving each room its own individual character. Some of the rooms come with antique four-poster beds which can be requested – simply ask the hotel when you make your booking.
The restaurant of the hotel continues the charming theme of the rest of the hotel, containing open fires, wooden panelling and elegant furniture. It offers an a la carte menu and a selection of fine wines and is open every evening. The Georgian House hotel also offers a number of wedding packages, for the perfect intimate wedding. Christenings, conferences and funeral wakes can also be held at the hotel.
