The Bell Hotel, Thetford, Norfolk

The Bell Hotel was built back in the 15th Century, it was first established as an Inn way back then and has seen many owners and guests pass through there in its time. Some ghost sightings include one of an ex-landlady and a hooded monk...

Many paranormal investigators and enthusiasts have revisited the hotel many times and truly feel that the site is one of the most haunted in all of Norfolk and the UK. They have regular group investigations and can provide you with all the information you need on your arrival.

The Bell Hotel itself has been a hostelry since it was established some 6 centuries ago. Some of its period features include ‘Wattle & Daub’ walls, a Samson’s post, Elizabethan wall paintings, a priest’s hole, and the original secret passage out of the Inn. There are 46 en-suite Bedrooms, one of which is the main suite bedroom which is reported to be haunted by the hooded monk. Whilst on the ground floor the drawing room is said to be the spot where people regularly catch a glimpse of Elizabeth Radcliffe, who was the landlady of the Inn several years ago.

Many other hauntings and personal experiences have occurred at this great little gem. Some of which include the feeling of being watched, unexplainable smell of perfume, sudden appearance of icy breath, and nearby footsteps. The locals have countless stories to share and if you’re staying there, buy them a drink at the bar in exchange for one of their chilling stories.

Round about the time in which The Bell Hotel was established, religious beliefs in the town of Thetford were of great importance. As a result there were numerous religious establishments in the area which is why the Inn was so aptly named The Bell.

The amount of history the Inn has is quite significant, and the sense of this history is heightened by the Bells’ original features with which you’re spoilt throughout the hotel. The bedrooms have recently been refurbished to a very high standard but the original character has remained untouched.

The traditional feel is also preserved in the warm and welcoming ambience of the hotel along with the good simple English food in which the restaurant specialises. The bar also serves delicious meals, together with traditional ales.
